I have a firm grasp on reality and an intergalactic spaceship. Daryl is creative director at Power of 9.
What are 3 things a designer worth his oats should have or know?
- A designer should have big balls. He/she must be able to constantly push boundaries and be challenged by other designers;
- He/she should know that the communication of your piece is as important as the design;
- Attention to detail is imperative. A good designer follows through on creative from the big idea, right down smallest of details.

What do you love about your job?
- I get to work on a variety of challenging projects, not just the same old mundane day in day out stuff.
- I hopefully get to impart some of my knowledge and experience to our junior art director.
- I learn a billion new things everyday.
What did you dream of being when you were a kid?
A Pilot. Didn’t we all?
What’s your power song?
Anything by Celine Dion or Engelbert Humperdink. Pffffft!
What do you do when you need some creative inspiration?
Listen to Celine Dion. And after that I look some top designers and illustrators or I go for a walk and shut off from the world for a while.
What are your top 3/5 favourites design sites?
With over a 1000 twitter followers, what do you think are the top 3/5 ways to rock online?
Be yourself. Engage with like minded people and don’t be shy to say what’s on your mind. Just remember though, a tweet is like a fart.. once it’s out there, you can’t get it back in!
Describe your perfect Saturday?
Wake up late, start getting dressed for work and then remember it’s Saturday. Not having to watch Barney at 6.30am. Catching a few waves in Muizenburg and then having a late lunch or braai with my family.
What is the one thing you wish more clients understood about creative direction?
That a good creative idea is worth paying for.
What has been your favourite design project at Power of 9 so far?
The Filippo Berio campaign. Look here.
What is your favourite design programme/tool?
Photoshop.
